Wander Woman

Small van, big adventures

From Dream to Nightmare

Expectations get me every time, like Charlie Brown trusting Lucy to hold the football. The trip to Bahia Honda Key wasn’t what I expected, and at first I felt disheartened. This trip started with excitement, shifted to frustration, and ended somewhere in between.

I’m here at the beautiful Bahia Honda State Park in Bahia Honda Key, Florida in Bayside 76. There’s a small problem with this campground and it’s called no-see-ums. Today the wind is blowing. You can see by my rain poncho. You might wonder why I have a rain poncho. The answer: thunderstorm at 2:00 a.m. No-see-ums are very small bugs that land on you and start eating your skin. You don’t notice them until you feel them biting you. Got a fire going to keep keep those little buggers away. As I said, it’s windy today, so I’m not getting attacked like I was last night. Here’s my setup. It’s kind of a mess. There’s a lake over there. While I was looking for kindling, I happened to wander over to this area right behind my campsite. I don’t know if you can see it here. All of that back there, you can’t really see it. It’s all just standing water with mud and this bunch of trees and reeds. Oh, there’s a good view back there. Oh, by the way, there’s a big sign that says crocodile area. It’s perfect environment for a crocodile. Not so much for a human who’s super sweet like me. The moral of the story is it’s supposed to rain tonight and I’m leaving. There’s only so much a person can take. This was a safe haven for a while. Screens work pretty good. The only thing I’m going to do before I leave is hit the beach where it’ll be very breezy and see if I can do a little snorkeling. What was once a dream turned into a nightmare.
