Small van, big adventures

A Long-Awaited Return to Bahia Honda

Ever since I visited Bahia Honda State Park in Florida back in 2013, on a memorable trip in the before times with my lovely Brian, I’ve dreamed of coming back to camp there. The day we spent was magical. We sat by the ocean, wandered along an enchanted path, and there was a sense of something vast and unseen in the moment, like generations before me standing just out of view, leaving behind an energy that words cannot describe. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture that feeling for later.

clouds.

After that trip, I checked the park’s website more times than I can count, hoping to snag a campsite. It was always booked months in advance.

Then, the other day, it finally happened. One night was available, and I grabbed it immediately. The next day, a second night opened up at the same site, clearly a cancellation. I couldn’t believe my luck. I told everyone I could. Most people responded with a polite “oh cool,” while the locals truly understood my excitement.

Honestly, the everyday party of Key West has started to wear on me. I’m ready for something quieter and more primitive, a place to clear my head and reflect on what this third act of my life might look like.

Bahia Honda, here we come.
