I’ve done several short weekend camping trips with Goldi at local campgrounds — sometimes with friends, sometimes solo, and twice with my #2 son and his friends. They like the group campsites along the Potomac River. I usually grab a separate site nearby, which turns out to be the best of both worlds: company when I want it, solitude when I need it.
Now I’m taking it a bit further and heading out on a longer trip, with Florida as the destination. The plan is to camp in the Keys, visit state and national parks, and spend time with old friends and family. Mostly, though, I’m chasing warmth, rest, and a little rejuvenation.

My first night on the road was just 300 feet off I-95 at Swampfox Campground in Florence, SC. This straight out of the past stop features a general store, retro bathroom décor, laundry and everything you might need. I pulled in, set up the bed, and was asleep in minutes. Sometime during the night, rain started tapping on the roof — confirmation that wrapping a few things in a tarp before turning in was a very good idea.
The next two nights were spent at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound, FL. The park is beautiful and the weather perfect. This trip is going to be really good.

And for anyone who likes the idea of camping but not so much the “roughing it” part — Jonathan Dickinson State Park even has glamping. It’s adorable. I’ll definitely be back.
Next stop: Key West. 🌴
